Smudged Ink Trick: 5-Minute Card With Distress Oxides!

If you're in a rush but still want to make a compelling card, I have the perfect cardmaking trick for you!

With the help of distress oxides, you'll be able to create a simple but gorgeous card in just under five minutes!

Watch the Video Tutorial:

The materials that you'll need are the following: card stock, washi tape, distress oxides, paper trimmer, Versamark watermark, embossing powder, and heat tool.

Read the Step-by-Step Guide Below:

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is apply a mask on you card. This little mask is where you'll be placing your sentiment later on. I just used some washi tape to cover the center of my card stock.

Step 2

Now, prepare two colors of your distress oxides. Always consider that the colors you'll be using will complement each other well.

Also get some extra pieces of card stock or paper. We'll be using these as another mask as we ink up our card.

Step 3

I placed my card stock mask halfway on top of the washi tape mask. Now, all we're doing is sliding off our distress oxide on top of it to create the smudged ink effect.

This might be a bit tricky for you, especially if you're afraid you'll mess it up. But don't worry! Just carefully align the pad face down and slide it gently and flick it at the end.

It should look like this. Pretty neat, right?

Step 4

Now that we have our smudge effect on the top side, we'll add the other one on the bottom. Using the other color of the distress oxide, just repeat the process. Just make sure you mask it properly and that it is aligned to the smudge we did earlier.

I made my second color smudge a bit wider to fully cover the mask I applied for my sentiment. Remember that you can always adjust it according to your liking! There's no right or wrong way to do it!

Step 5

Once you're happy with the smudges, dry it off with a heat tool.

Step 6

It's time to pull off our washi tape masking. I used a tweezer so I can pull it out more easily, but if you have long nails, just go for it!

Step 7

You are now left with this funky central point to add a really nice sentiment! I'm going to add an embossed one to make it extra creative.
Using the Versamark watermark, just stamp a sentiment of your choice right at the center of the smudge.
Pour some embossing powder on top of it, making sure you cover all the wet parts. Remove the excess powder and dry it off with a heat tool.

Step 7

Using a paper trimmer, cut it to size. We'll be mounting it on another card stock, but if you're happy with the plain white one, it's not a problem.
And there it is! This card is so simple and clean, but that colorful smudge effect is really full of personality!

Happy cardmaking!
